Windbrow Arts Centre is excited to announce this y Windbrow Arts Centre is excited to announce this year’s Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala! will take place on Africa Day, the 25th May 2024. Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala! is a procession of fabulous public performances bringing joy, play and wonder to the streets of Hillbrow on Africa Day, 25 May 2024. This collaboration between multiple Hillbrow organisations is curated by Kwasha! Theatre Company, a company of young theatre-makers resident at the Windybrow Arts Centre, in partnership with artists in the city. The event will start at 10:00 at the Windybrow, and dance, sing, and parade its way to back to Windybrow for a music concert and party.

Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala! returns this year in celebration of the possibilities that public performance brings to public space; to spread energy, laughter, surprise and provocation and to make visible the wonderful work that several organisations and individuals have continued to do in this complex area regardless of the challenges. These organisations include Dlala Nje, MES, Fight with Insight, Three2Six, Lefika La Phodiso, Innovation of Excellence, Hillbrow Radio, George’s Boxing Club, Johannesburg Awakening Minds.
‘Vote for Me’ - An innovative stage play is in ‘Vote for Me’ - An innovative stage play is introducing young people to democracy, leadership and the importance of using our votes wisely.
The title refers to the idea of voting on behalf of the youth. This is because who parents vote for will also have implications for their children.

Directed by Lesedi Jobs, Written by Ameera Patel and Performed by the KWASHA! Theatre Company, The play is an unconventional theatre production that walks a journey from the past to the future, while developing a conversation around leadership, and allowing the audience to engage with the actors.

In their journey of unpacking the loaded words of In their journey of unpacking the loaded words of Aime Cesaire, our teenagers were paid a visit by Poet and Writer Lesego Rampolokeng on Tuesday the 13th of February, for a special reading of the poem “A Return to My Native Land”. Through a workshop led by Stacy Hardy, the group held a heated discussion with Rampolokeng @paparampsfoundation discussing their understanding and views of Cesaire’s work. The group further interrogated the similarities and differences in the spaces Cesaire speaks of in comparison to their current engagements of Hillbrow and the inner city of Johannesburg.

The workshop was an insightful window to understanding and hearing the views of our teenagers on the current political state of the country.

Yesterday was World Read Aloud Day #WRAD2024. The Yesterday was World Read Aloud Day #WRAD2024. The Windybrow Arts Centre library embarked on a journey to foster literacy and the joy of reading across our community. We visited Berea Primary School, Centurion College, and I.H. Harris Primary School, where we shared captivating story “The Lost Kitten” from Nali’bali @nalibalisa . Through this initiative, we aimed to celebrate the power of reading aloud, instilling a love for literature and promoting literacy among children. It was a rewarding experience to witness the magic of storytelling and story reading come alive, nurturing young minds and fostering a culture of reading within the inner city of Johannesburg.

We are super excited to announce this dynamic and committed group of artists who have already proven themselves be full of sassiness (with all its positive connotations – spirited, bold, assertive, confident, witty), and creativity.

Windybrow is excited to announce that we launched Windybrow is excited to announce that we launched the Notebook of a Return – a project brought to Windybrow by Stacy Hardy, the new Head of the Creative Writing at the University of the Witwatersrand. A collaboration with the Transperformations research project at the The Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society, the University of Chicago, The School of Literature, Language and Media and The Centre for the Less Good Idea.

Our teenagers will journey with an esteemed group of artists to reimagine and stage a version of Césaire’s Cahier d’un retour au pays natal/ Notebook of a Return to My Native Land. Working from the understanding that translation is at once a form of close reading, and a creative act, it aims to introduce young/ teenage readers to Césaire and to develop a new “homolinguistic”, other-tongue (slang) and mother-tongue translation of Cahier d’un retour au pays natal/ Notebook of a Return to my Native Land. Using a workshop process, we will explore the context out of which the poem emerged and catalyse its relevance today to produce a new work that is once a homage to Césaire and a vibrant new work in its own right.

On Saturday, 30 September, the Windybrow Arts Cent On Saturday, 30 September, the Windybrow Arts Centre, in collaboration with Camp I Am and @nandosrsa , is set to host its first-ever Spelling Bee competition for schools in inner-city Johannesburg!

This exciting event will bring together thirty-seven Grade 7 learners from IH Harris Primary School, Mahlasedi College, New Model Private College, and participants of the Windybrow’s Literacy and Homework Support Programme to showcase their spelling prowess, compete for prizes, and earn the esteemed title of the city’s best speller.

@gerardbester Head of the Windybrow Arts Centre, says the Spelling Bee marks an exciting and novel opportunity for local learners - "many of whom have never participated in such an event, and a fun way for them to develop essential skills”. Nando’s Benmore Gardens Branch Manager, @colly825 a proud alumnus of Hillbrow Theatre, wanted a space at the Windybrow Arts Centre to hold a Spelling Bee, and Bester immediately responded: “we want to partner”! Nxumalo, a committed advocate for children and youth of the neighbourhoods surrounding the Windybrow Arts Centre wants to “offer learners in Johannesburg a stage to showcase their remarkable spelling abilities”.

Bester reconnected with @kaicc001 Executive Director of Camp I Am, a youth educational program who also mentored the Windybrow Arts Centre, and crafted the challenging wordlist, which will remain a secret until an hour before the competition. “A Spelling Bee is a great way to ignite a passion for spelling, which serves as the gateway to reading and writing,” said Crooks-Chissano.

We had the pleasure of hosting @sewela_langeni at We had the pleasure of hosting @sewela_langeni at our Children's Reading Room yesterday. She is the owner of @bookcirclecapital and she read her book titled, "Making Friends with Feelings" for our Literacy Programme Learners. The book is a compassionate story that teaches boys that it is OK to cry when they are sad and that it is healthy to express their emotions. We bought copies of Sewela's book in all 11 official languages and had a few of our learners read the book in their home language. 📚

It is important for community libraries to preserve and promote literature and storytelling in African languages. At the recent @thedalro Copyright User Conference it was stated that if the over 2000 community libraries brought two copies of each locally produced book, it would guarantee the purchase of over 4000 copies of each book before hitting the general market!

A special thanks to @sewela_langeni for creating this story, @subi_bosa for the beautiful illustration and @newafricabooks for making it available in all official languages!
